There are many places you can buy an Oriental rug, but are these places qualified to really sell you a rug? Check and see if they have professional trade qualifications, are they a member of a reputable trade organization like the Oriental Rug Retailers of America. Ask them how long they have been in business, what guarantees will they give you and are they in writing. Will you be able to exchange the rug at a later date if you there is a problem with the order or if you change your mind?
Check the condition of the rug, as this will affect the value, if the rug is not in the best condition. Other things to consider are the age, color, price and integrity of the fabric. Find out if the rug has ever been altered in anyway this where the integrity of the fabric comes in. If the rug has been altered this can affect the value of the rug.
A rug should not have any lose fibers or should not be loosely woven. When buying an Oriental rug always look for a tight weave. To check and see if the rug has a tight weave do this simple test twist and gently pull the rug, if you do this you would be able to hear if there is any tearing or popping noises, if so this is a dead giveaway that the rug is not tightly woven.
Some people think that if the rug has been repaired you should stay away from it. That is not true in all cases, in fact some collectors look for these types of rugs as they feel the rug is more genuine if it was repaired at one time or another. When in doubt as a reputable seller what they think about it.
When inspecting a rug look at the colors. Are the colors vibrant or do they look washed out or dull? You want to make sure the rug has clean and very sharp colors. This indicates that the rug maker used quality dyes when making the rug.
Check for fading, if fading is accruing the rug make sure that is does not detract from the overall look and feel of the rug. Make sure that it has not be touched up, some rugs that are faded are touched up with felt tipped maker’s. Of course you would have to inspect the rug up close to notice this.
Finally take a look at the colors again you want to look and see if vegetable dyes where used as these are more valuable then synthetic dyes which are the modern techniques used to make a rug today. To find out what kind of dye was used do this test, take a white handkerchief or cloth and wet it. Once wet, dab the handkerchief or cloth on various spots of the rug. If no color comes off, then the rug should be good to go.
If you are looking to buy a pile rug, then you can separate the pile and take a look deep down in the base of the pile, the color of the base should be the same color as the to of the rug. Is it the same color? If it’s the same color, then we can assume that the rug has not been colored with synthetic dyes.
Some thing you can expect from an old rug is to see some worn spots, these spots should not cover the entire surface of the rug. If you do see worn spots all over the rug this can be because the rug was tampered with to appear old.
If you do your homework you should have no problems finding a quality Oriental rug that you can treasure for yours to come.
